Beware of Dangerous Kid Toys

The holidays are upon us and with that comes lots of children’s toys. Preventinjury.org did a study and found that over 3 billion toys are sold each year. It’s a fact that kids love to play with toys. While safety guidelines have been put in place to prevent children from being injured the fact is that children are hurt at times when playing with toys. Younger children generally under the age of 4 are at a higher risk for injuries. In a 2002 study it was found that:

  • At least 13 children under the age of 14 died from toy-related injuries. Of those 13, more than 50% of them were under the age of 4.
  • It was estimated that165,200 children under the age of 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for toy-related injuries and 34% of these injuries were to children under the age of 4.

The key to healthy living when it comes to children and toys is to watch out for the hidden dangers. When buying a toy make sure that it is age appropriate especially when it comes to small children. Things to keep an eye out for include:

  • Choking and strangulation hazards.
  • Toy parts that could puncture.
  • Beware of electronic toys that have parts that could cause electrocution.

Give a child the gift of an amazing toy that you know will be fun as well as safe for them to play with.
